Close call at frist

The Healdsburg Greyhounds varsity baseball team continues to put up the numbers in its 2026 season, both in league games—they are 4-1—and overall with a 10-3 record. They only lost one game at home all year, an unfortunate 10-1 fail against Analy on March 25.

Things have improved since then. Last week the team added to a two-game winning streak with an April 2 squeaker over Santa Rosa, 2-1, and a much more comfortable crushing of Piner the next day, 29-2. Two back-to-back innings of 11 or more runs put the game out of reach; Piner’s only two runs came in the top of the fifth.

Those high-scoring games added to the larger trend interrupted by the loss to Analy. Healdsburg walloped Sonoma Academy 17-1 on March 17, and a few days later they posted the same score over Lick-Wilmerding, 17-1.

In particular April 3 was a record day for Henry Smith, who started the game on the mound and struck out five in three innings of work for the win. But it was from the batter’s box that Smith made his biggest impact, driving in seven runs on four hits, including two doubles and a triple. Hayden Mariani, Dillan Jocius and Alex Espinosa each had three RBIs as the Hounds cruised to the 29-2 win over the hapless Prospectors, who are now 0-7 on the year, 0-4 in the league.

The only baseball local game this week is a scheduled Wednesday meeting with Montgomery at Rec Park, followed by another game against Montgomery at their field on Friday. Each team in the NCS-Redwood league plays every other team three times; Healdsburg beat the Vikings 13-3 on March 13 in their first meeting.

The rest of the baseball schedule shows a series of similar back-to-back games against league rivals through May 8—first Analy, then St. Vincent, then Santa Rosa and back to Piner. The only non-league game in that span is a Saturday April 25 meeting against Napa at Rec Park.

Claire Berry hit two triples, Ashley Jenkins hit another and the Healdsburg Lady Hounds rallied for 13 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to crush Terra Linda’s hopes of a second win this season last Friday at Healdsburg High.

When Healdsburg came to the plate in the middle of the fourth they were down a run, 4-3, but the batters kept coming to the box and crossing the plate to pile up an unbeatable 12-run lead, leading to the invocation of the mercy rule.

The final score was 13-4, the second lopsided victory for Healdsburg in as many days. The previous day, Thursday April 2, the Lady Hounds crushed Santa Rosa, 20-1, to break a four-game losing streak. That was Healdsburg’s first league win of the Redwood season; they are now 1-2 in the Redwood, 5-5 on the year.

Mia Halvorsen continues to lead the team on the mound and at the plate—her batting average of .444 is a notch ahead of Berry’s .429, her on-base percentage is .605, she has  scored 19 runs and she’s tied with Lily Farrer with eight stolen bases. Farrer is also backing up Halvorsen as a pitcher.

Two home games are scheduled this week, against league-leading Ukiah (3-0) on Tuesday (results too late for press time) and Thursday against Elsie Allen (0-3). A non-league contest follows on Friday against Maria Carrillo.

The home games on the HHS campus usually draw a few parents and friends, but they are open to anyone who wants to drop by the corner of Monte Vista and University for an uplifting exposure to team loyalty and support. Go Hounds!
