While some 17 films and three “surprise screenings” are spread out over the four-day festival, that obscure majority is outweighed in impact by four classic love stories, including 'Roman Holiday,' 'The Birdcage,' 'Umbrellas of Cherbourg' and none other than Nick Cage and Cher in 'Moonstruck.'

"How much a person likes 'Disclosure Day,' the newest film from director Steven Spielberg, depends a lot on what their favorite film of his is. I’ve spent my entire life chasing the feeling I got from watching 'Jurassic Park' for the first time at 13 years old. So to say that I looked forward to 'Disclosure Day" is a massive understatement," says film critic Jared Rasic.

While the film makes a few minor rookie mistakes with its script—making too many things literal that could have been understood on a purely instinctual level—'Backrooms' is an astonishingly assured and tonally immaculate first feature by such a young filmmaker.

The courtyard outside True West on Friday eveniong was a “scene” in more ways than one: Many were there to see and meet Cameron Crowe and Ben Fong-Torres—legendary names in the rock movie canon—as they enjoyed that famous Healdsburg hospitality, mixed and mingled, and enjoyed the movie 'Almost Famous' for the umpteenth time.

“There are usually some fun surprises for us in the line-up of our ‘Audience Favorites’ program,” said co-founder Pamela Demorest. “Some films resonate more with our audience than they did with our celebrity jury, and we always want our guests to feel like a vital part of the process.”

Now that the nominations have been announced, let’s talk about them and what people should try to see before the big show. And once we get closer (the Oscars are March 15 this year), I’ll write my annual piece on what will win versus what should win.
