Newsroom Notebook: Hard choices
The Windsor Town Council had a chance to say yes to community and say no to money on March 7.
Decoding Teenagers: College bound
The other day I was catching up with my younger sister on the phone. As we were talking I found myself smiling at the absurdity of our conversation. She was rambling on about the perils of kindergarten acceptance. Been there, done that I thought. But I calmly reassured her that her 5-year-old would be fine, and in 10 years the kindergarten search would turn into a college search. That’s where I am. What a huge, monumental leap our teen son and my family will be taking in just a few years.
Off the Top of My Head: The paradox of children
Having children is the greatest paradox in life; at least it is in my life. How can something so great cause me such grief and worry?
Free Trade and tariffs
A discussion about free trade versus tariffs raises all sort of choices, conflicts and conundrums. We’re not talking about forging steel, smelting aluminum or processing Trumpisms. Here, we do wine and beer, tourism, water exports, clean energy distribution, medical technology and don’t forget cannabis, among all our other potential imports and exports.
Class Act: Brooks students lend a hand to Town of Windsor with design thinking challenge
Dr. Hilary Sowers teaches our fifth grade GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) class at Brooks. This year her students took on a challenging PBL (Problem Based Learning) experience. Sowers explained that her students created a ‘driving question’ (as is done with all PBL projects). The question was, “How can the town of Windsor remodel Hall Park so that more people will use the park?”

Commentary: Affordability complexities
Last Wednesday, the Windsor Town Council on a 4-1 vote accepted $2 million in affordable housing monies from developer Bob Bisno in return for withdrawing the condition that he provide 77 apartment units with rents limited to median income tenants for a 10-year period.
Someday We’ll Laugh About This … Right? Collections
Last weekend I decided to tackle Thomas’ room. It was time to do a thorough dusting and vacuuming, not just a quick pass. I also wanted to go through his closet and dresser to pull out some clothes that didn’t fit any longer, and see if we could weed out a few old toys that he doesn’t play with anymore.
Sunshine and you
This is Sunshine Week, the annual tribute to America’s free press, coordinated by the American Society of News Editors and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. It coincides with the birthday (March 16) of our fourth president James Madison, the author of much of our U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Cannabis Country: Grow your own?
If you grow tomatoes, consider growing marijuana. Skill is required, but it’s not rocket science. The legal limit varies from city to city. It’s best to check with the authorities, or go to sonomacounty.ca.gov/Cannabis/Personal-Use-and-Cultivation/ for information. The site states that, “Permits are not required for personal cultivation” on land outside city limits.

Local ‘rock star’ on art tour
For Alexander Valley sculptor T Barny, it’s about more than just about the stone. “It’s a way scientists or astronomers envision the universe as being infinite, but finite,” he says. “It just keeps going, keeps going, keeps going.” The concepts of art and topology animate him.
