Smart growth

On Tuesday, an abbreviated three-member Windsor Planning Commission reviewed conceptual plans for the annexation and development of between 240 and 250 homes on 58 acres of vineyards north of Jensen Lane at the western edge of Windsor.

Off the Top of My Head: Gentrification

I have a cousin who lives in the city. He’s been there about 30 years. I remember when he first moved. I went to see him and I told him, “Dude, this is the worst part of town. No one lives here but derelicts and poor people.” He smiled and said, “Well, I qualify on both counts.”

Statues and town squares

What’s wrong with the rest of America these days? There are too many places and hometowns where angry mobs are marching in the streets and hate speech is spewing from their town squares. Why are so many of our fellow Americans at odds about their own history? They are tearing down old statues from their plazas and courthouse lawns, but not everyone understands why. We should teach them a lesson about how to make better use of their public squares. We really should.

Decoding Teenagers

Letting go

Someday We’ll Laugh About This … Right?

Unexpected hiccup

Moving beyond combustion

When we first read about the goal for Sonoma County to see 138,000 new electric vehicles (EVs) replace gas-powered cars by the year 2030, we chortled in disbelief. Silver Linings

Drop-in computer help, hearning screenings, and legal counseling for seniors

But I Digress: Full of fire and fury, signifying nothing

Last time out I composed a rather open-minded and open-hearted look at the man in the White House. It was written as an attempt to reveal a silver lining in his behavior, offering possible reasons why he sees fit to relish in spewing venom. In short, I was trying to find the human in the human being.

Decoding Teenagers: Warrior Mother

I think “toddlerhood” is by far the most fun stage in our kids’ development. They are sponges, always absorbing new information, sights and sounds. The world is exciting and new. A trip to the park is an adventure and making a sand castle is magical. You pick out their clothes, choose their meals and plan their day. Easy right? As their wonderful personalities emerge, you get a glimpse into who they might be, what they might like. After you think you have it figured out, it all starts again because they turn into teenagers.

Sculptor T Barny with diamond saw

Local ‘rock star’ on art tour

For Alexander Valley sculptor T Barny, it’s about more than just about the stone. “It’s a way scientists or astronomers envision the universe as being infinite, but finite,” he says. “It just keeps going, keeps going, keeps going.” The concepts of art and topology animate him.
