State of the fourth estate

Oct. 2-8 is being celebrated as National Newspaper Week. This is the 76th annual observance dating to 1940, covering a span of time that has included great changes to the business of newspapers, as well as throughout our society.

Rust is primarily oxidation-producing iron oxides, most commonly Fe3O4 and Fe2O3. Other metals undergo oxidation, but the term rust is exclusively used for iron. Copper’s oxidation (or corrosion) creates a blue-green color, copper carbonate (Cu2 CO3), commonly described as patina. The Statue of Liberty, clad with hand-hammered sheets of copper, has copper’s distinctive blue-green patina.

A few weekends ago I went antique shopping with my teen daughter and my mom. It’s something the three of us really enjoy doing together. Knick knacks of the past are cooler, better crafted and remind me of good memories and simpler times. Things just happen to find us, forgotten items, dusty and old that seem to shout “remember me, bring me home.”

We have many regular and faithful readers of these weekly editorials. We know this because we are told so in the grocery store checkout line, on errands to the hardware store and in impromptu sidewalk critique sessions. We receive lots of encouragement and are gently told sometimes to tone down the sermonizing. These conversations are our best rewards.

‘Angels’ lands at Raven Performing Arts

:Every Sunday matinee we do a post-show discussion with the audience, so they get a chance to make comments and ask questions of the actors.
