They matter to me too

The beautiful sunshine is back to warm our faces and to dry out our fairways. Like many of you I spent the last two months watching Windsor Golf Club’s 1st, 9th, and 18th fairways get battered and soaked by the winter rainstorms. These holes looked like long deep lakes with a few tiny “dry” grass spots for birds to rest.

The ultimate manifestation of inequity is that, in the worst of times, the vulnerable suffer the most.

"One if by land, two if by sea.” Longfellow immortalized Paul Revere’s ride for freedom, which took place 250 years ago, on April 18, 1775. Revere’s mission was to alert Samuel Adams and John Hancock that British troops were coming to Lexington and Concord to destroy military supplies.

From our archives, April 25, 1901: "Beginning with next Sunday the Railroad Company will run an extra train to San Francisco during the summer season. The rate will be one fare for the round trip between any two points on the line. The train will leave Healdsburg at 7:30 a. m. and arrive in San Francisco at 10:40."

Long, long ago in 1897 a little girl named Virginia wrote to her local newspaper asking if Santa Claus was real. The editor replied: “(you) have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age” as he defended the spirit of love, generosity and childlike faith. “How dreary would the world be if there were no Santa Claus,” he wrote.

Monday’s Healdsburg City Council meeting agenda was long, and by far the most consequential item on the agenda was the last item: deciding how to move forward with Mayor Leah Gold’s soon-to-be-vacant council seat. Three options were on the table: to leave the seat vacant until a special election could be held; to make a short-term appointment to the seat, which would then be permanently filled by special election; or to appoint someone to the seat’s full remaining term of around two years. What resulted was a travesty of bureaucratic proportions.
