Keeping the Faith: On seeing the other person’s point of view
In the 1950s, we had Halford E. Luccock writing the back page of “The Christian Century,” a journal of more or less progressive Christian news, scholarship, and opinion that still comes out every week. During Luccock’s time, readers went immediately to the back page to see what he was up to, much like people look through the New Yorker for the cartoons before turning to whatever else might be there.

The eagerly awaited visit from the Pittsburgh family has come and gone in the blink of an eye. One minute we were making plans to pick them up from SFO, and the next thing we knew, we were loading them up to return to the airport.

In 1966 the movie “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming,” was filmed along the local Mendocino-Sonoma coast. In the plot, a lone enemy submarine crashes offshore, igniting a runaway rumor chain that almost leads to a machine gun battle, hostage taking and a U.S. Air Force strike. We can only imagine that if the players in the film all had Facebook and Twitter accounts how much faster the rumors of attack would have flown and how World War III might not have been avoidable.
Off the Top of My Head: The year of the woman
Happy New Year. I love the New Year. I love it because I like new beginnings. There is, for me, great hope and optimism when I start anything new, so the New Year excites me greatly.

Return to the Russian River
When Jake Messing stood in front of the mural he had just completed for Russian Riverkeeper on the north side of the nonprofit’s headquarters at 139 Healdsburg Ave., he had finished more than another mural. He had made a return to the source from the sea himself, like the salmon he portrayed.
