Flashbacks for June 27

Postcard view
From the Healdsburg Tribune, June 24, 1949: "New faces are seen about the city, new cars on the streets, activity in the Fitch Mountain area is increasing . . . which all points to the fact that summer residents are here again..."

Snapshot: Tall trees in local groves

Riverfront Regional Park, Windsor
Redwoods are magnificent trees whose beauty we get to experience in Sonoma County and Healdsburg. These beauties are set in the picnic grove at Riverfront Regional Park. The park includes three miles of trails for walking through redwoods plus boating, hiking, horseback riding and picnicking.

New Year’s resolutions

As a first year County Supervisor, I often tell people that “I am so full of purpose I might pop.” I love my job … and I don’t take a bit of it for granted. Some people ask me how I deal with the negative aspects of being a local elected official - the accusations, the blame and the demands to fix everything under the sun. I usually respond that the good, and the opportunity to do more good, is what drives me through the difficulty. At this level of government, I can truly work with you all to shape the future of our community. What an awesome responsiblity and opportunity. As we reach the end of 2015, I wanted to share some thoughts on what has been a non-stop thrill ride of a year.

Keeping the Faith: Science versus religion, again

Pride in Public Service

America and football

During the years of the Spanish Flu pandemic (1918-20) only some public gatherings were banned. As with our current COVID-19 pandemic, sports leagues and teams persisted in finding ways to keep the games happening. Major League baseball played a normal schedule in 1918 and it was later proved that the World Series between the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs was a virus “super spreader” event. Professional football’s popularity was yet to happen and college football was still king of the sport. Most colleges played on with only 18 prominent schools canceling their games. (Don’t forget, these were also the years of World War I.)

‘Angels’ lands at Raven Performing Arts

:Every Sunday matinee we do a post-show discussion with the audience, so they get a chance to make comments and ask questions of the actors. We saw there were a lot of people who were quite moved and quite touched by the play. So the opening weekend could not have gone better, as far as I’m concerned," said director Steven David Martin.
