SENIOR CENTER happenings

The Healdsburg Senior Center has been serving the community

Our billion dollar crop

Sonoma County has been the egg basket to the world, the hop capital and prune belt of California and a prime fruit supplier to our troops during World War II. From its earliest days of Mexican and European settlers and farmers, our abundant and fertile region has ranked as a top ag producing county in the United States.

Natives and immigrants

As our nation just completed its 115th Congressional election with almost 120 million people voting amid thunderbolt issues such as immigration, national security and voter suppression, we took special notice of the unique viewpoint shared by a very small cohort — the continent’s Native Americans.

Yosemite Falls
There’s a lot of water flowing into Yosemite Valley. All the major waterfalls are gushing, including Vernal Falls. Unnamed waterfalls from snowmelt seemingly flow out of granite walls everywhere one looks.

Guest Commentary: Pension reform is simple

The solution to the county’s pension problem is simple, it’s just not easy to implement. Implementation will require political courage, a commodity often in short supply. The fact there is a serious problem with the county’s pension cost was acknowledged by the Board of Supervisors in 2011. The recent report by the Independent Citizen Advisory Committee on Pension Matters further documented that the problem is far from being solved five years after reforms had begun. More importantly, as a result of the committee’s work, we now fully understand why pension costs are so high, and we know a way to fix that problem.

‘Angels’ lands at Raven Performing Arts

:Every Sunday matinee we do a post-show discussion with the audience, so they get a chance to make comments and ask questions of the actors. We saw there were a lot of people who were quite moved and quite touched by the play. So the opening weekend could not have gone better, as far as I’m concerned," said director Steven David Martin.
