From the Library

It’s time for the Friends of Healdsburg Library Fall Book Sale and the books are here waiting for you. As is typical, the sale runs Wednesday through Friday, November 15–18 with Wednesday a Friends members-only day (join at the door for only $5) and the beloved $6 Bag Sale on Saturday. In addition, the Friends will offer two free bags of books to anyone who has lost their home, also on Saturday. Don’t forget the Special Books — new, high quality books in pristine condition that are looking for a new home — available Wednesday through Friday. Our Friends organization is one of the best around and we are so grateful for all they do to support the library year after year.

Off the Top of My Head: There is an upside to the coronavirus

These are strange times. Isn’t this weird? Wow, never experienced this before. Just about everyone I’ve met recently has started the conversation with something similar. It’s understandable, no one really knows what to say because none of us really knows what to expect.

Let’s get happy

Lots of us have been attending high school graduations lately, while many more of us have not. Still, whether very new or faded into sepia by time, we all share cherished graduation memories.

Plants have much to say if you listen

Some folks believe they should talk to their plants. How does one do that?

Cannabis Country: Grow your own?

If you grow tomatoes, consider growing marijuana. Skill is required, but it’s not rocket science. The legal limit varies from city to city. It’s best to check with the authorities, or go to sonomacounty.ca.gov/Cannabis/Personal-Use-and-Cultivation/ for information. The site states that, “Permits are not required for personal cultivation” on land outside city limits.

Someday we’ll laugh about this . . . right? Me, myself and I… and a few other relatives, too

I love genealogy and family stories. There’s something amazing to me about how traits and characteristics get carried down, generation after generation, and in ties we have to the past. I look like my mother, think like my father and am built like my paternal grandmother.

Instant intelligence

We don’t understand all the fuss about distance learning during the pandemic where almost all the schools are forced to remain closed. We should be taking advantage of this unfortunate viral invasion and start making all these school closings permanent. We don’t need schools any more.

Commentary: DIY pesticides … Are they safe?

I was on a call with a friend the other day. She just happened to mention how she has been spraying newly developing weeds growing in the cracks of her walkway with the widely popular vinegar, dish detergent and salt recipe. It’s wonderful that she was getting a jump start on the young weeds, since the best time to manage them is when they are newly sprouted. However, unfortunately this internet recipe that has been trending does more harm than good.

‘Angels’ lands at Raven Performing Arts

:Every Sunday matinee we do a post-show discussion with the audience, so they get a chance to make comments and ask questions of the actors. We saw there were a lot of people who were quite moved and quite touched by the play. So the opening weekend could not have gone better, as far as I’m concerned," said director Steven David Martin.
