Market Report: An extended market
Hello market friends. I missed my deadline for the column this month, because I was so focused on making sure word got out that we were extending the dates for Saturday market. Yes, for those of you who haven’t kept up with the latest news (in Healdsburg, that is), it’s true. The Healdsburg Farmers’ Market is continuing into December; staying open through the 19th of the month. Not only will we be open three extra weeks, we’re extending the hours slightly as well: staying open until 12:30 p.m. in December, just to catch those of you longing for an extra half hour under the covers. We’ll still be in the West Plaza Parking Lot, where we are all year, so it’ll be easy to find your favorites.
Commentary: Join HEF for Healdsburg Education Week
Healdsburg Education Foundation (HEF) has worked for more than 30 years to raise funds to ensure that the students of Healdsburg Unified School District (HUSD) receive the education they deserve. Now we invite you to join us as we take this opportunity to imagine what our schools can be and how HEF can continue to help to meet the changing needs of our schools. Distance learning has created challenges, some anticipated and some that we could have never imagined. The gaps we have all worked so hard to close have become wider and our students, teachers and schools need us now more than ever to provide critical resources to navigate these uncharted waters.
From the Library: Picking up and dropping off books
The library has now been operating with curbside pickup for a few weeks and we are happy to report that this system has been working pretty smoothly. Our thanks go out to so many of you who have taken advantage of this new service, both for giving it a try and for working carefully with our safety protocols as we work to ensure the health of the public and our staff. If you haven't given it a try yet, I encourage you to do so and you can read more information online at sonomalibrary.org/curbside.
Not so super
We are now 47 days away from Super Tuesday. If you think that has something to do with the NFL’s Super Bowl, you need a lot of voter education. (The Super Bowl is Feb. 2.) March 3 is Super Tuesday when California and 12 other states will hold primary elections, including party voting for U.S. President.
Sonoma County’s divided rooms
Most large meetings on Sonoma County business or government topics are attended by mostly older people who are predominantly white.
State of the fourth estate
Oct. 2-8 is being celebrated as National Newspaper Week. This is the 76th annual observance dating to 1940, covering a span of time that has included great changes to the business of newspapers, as well as throughout our society.
Teacher Appreciation Week
At last we offer an editorial about love, hope and promise. And to think our main subject is about one of our biggest and most expensive government programs. How surprising for us to be praising Big Government.
The wars of Christmas
We don’t mean to wade into the “war on Christmas” so soon after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but the charades and contradictions of too many unwise Christians leaves us little choice.
Country Roads: Sleepless nights and poison oak
I believe one can safely assume that most of the world isn’t sleeping through the night anymore. Dropping onto their pillows and immediately overtaken by blessed, recharging sleep can only be associated with those on the front lines of the coronavirus.
Arts & Entertainment
More than a movie theater …
Not all the magic will be on the screen when the True West Film Center opens later this month. Here are some photos from a preview tour on Sept. 25...
