Commentary: Stewarding the electronic dinosaur
When discarded, the toxicity of electronic waste functions as an eroding agent on clean water, healthy soil and fresh air. The impacts of improperly disposed e-waste are measurable, harmful and applicable on a global scale. The general cause and consequence of its mismanagement seem to be shared equally among manufacturers and consumers alike.
Cannabis Country
Prop 64, the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, which passed on Election Day, went into effect on midnight Nov. 9. While it’s still too early to make accurate predictions, the law has clearly made a difference in the lives of local citizens. Indeed, it’s now legal for individuals to grow marijuana for personal use and to posses it and smoke it in the privacy of their own homes, except in Windsor, Healdsburg, Sonoma and other communities that have adopted urgency moratoriums.
We own this
It has been four months since the Oct. 8 north bay wildfires, and we continue to look both backward and forward. The very early steps of rebuilding and recovery have begun. Resources and strategies continue to be bundled. And the drastically altered picture that is Sonoma County’s future is beginning to come into focus. It is both daunting and exhilarating.
Old roots, young branches
August brings us to the time of year of all things agricultural. There’s the busyness of another harvest and the excitement of the Sonoma County and Gravenstein Apple fairs. It all happens with our county’s golden sunlit backdrop of open lands, fertile fields, trees and vines — and all under unobstructed skies. It’s a picture free of petty annoyances like traffic, urban noises, money woes or yesterday’s squabbles.
Pawns at the polls
Days like these, on the eve of an important election with its coupling of high principle and low putridness, make us wonder what the hell is going on.
Flashbacks
The following snippets of history are drawn from the pages of the Healdsburg Tribune, the Healdsburg Enterprise and the Sotoyome Scimitar, and are prepared by the volunteers at the Healdsburg Museum & Historical Society.
