EX LIBRIS

“Dorothy Parker – What Fresh Hell Is This?” a biography by Marion Meade. 451 pages with index and illustrations. The question is one that Parker often used to answer her telephone. The subject of this biography is often irascible, willful and not easy to like; she became a leading voice in The New Yorker at its inception, followed by several years working in Hollywood, friends with Hemingway, Fitzgerald and the entire world of New York writers who gathered at the round table in the Algonquin Hotel. Her response to meeting Will Rogers was, “I always liked a man I never met.” Meade manages to portray her subject in a sympathetic manner and gives us a portrait full of the life that Parker always exhibited across the years. Check it out.

Keeping the Faith: My immigrant forebears

I write this on March 1, Saint David’s Day. Saint David is to Wales as Saint Patrick is to Ireland. Saint David, Dewi Sant in the native tongue, was born about the year 500. Like Saint Patrick in Ireland 100 years earlier, Saint David established schools and monasteries in the westward protruding belly of Britain that is Wales.

But I digress …

Anybody got a plan?

Whither Reagan’s America?

Lots of the presidential election talk these days is about “Reagan’s America.” The GOP candidates all claim to be from there and they speak of it like it’s some kind of magical Camelot or a Lake Wobegon where all the men are natural-born citizens, all the women are against abortion and all the children are exactly average.

Our Christmas blessings

Merry Christmas to everyone. We all have so much to be thankful for and we welcome this special time of the year to remind ourselves and each other of the many joys, comforts and hopes we share in our  daily, but oh so busy, lives.
