The Healdsburg Farmers’ Market is 40 years old this year. It’s been in a bunch of different locations, from an empty lot near the old train station, to its current Saturday location in the parking lot at North and Vine.

It’s exciting to see 10 residents vie for three town council seats this fall. Hopefully as we get to know the candidates we will get reporting by this paper and other forums that provide real substance and depth on how each candidate would make decisions for us during their tenure. Healdsburg is facing a crisis unique to the economic engine that has brought us notoriety and acclaim. Most of the Transit Occupancy Tax (TOT) is the result of our success as a tourist destination, and, in the coming 12 to 18 months, a 67% shortfall of TOT is expected. In the midst of this calamity, our city manager has accepted a new position and will leave July 3. Finding a new city manager is job number one for our city council. What qualities should they be looking for?

Return to the Russian River
When Jake Messing stood in front of the mural he had just completed for Russian Riverkeeper on the north side of the nonprofit’s headquarters at 139 Healdsburg Ave., he had finished more than another mural. He had made a return to the source from the sea himself, like the salmon he portrayed.
