Our Lady of Guadalupe falls to St. John in Catholic Youth girl’s basketball

Our Lady of Guadalupe (OLG)’s 7th grade girl’s team mounted a furious comeback but fell short, 38-35, to St. John in Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) play. The local girls trailed by as much as 21 points before fighting back to tie the game at 35. A desperate buzzer-beating three point shot by St. John was the ultimate difference and left OLG Coach Erika Boyle’s team with a 2-3 record in league play.

Wrestlers garner medals in state tournament

The Windsor Wrestling Club is making the most of its program, with several athletes logging medal-winning performances at the state championships in Fresno on June 7-8.The event, held at the Selland Arena, included high level competition in both Freestyle and Greco Divisions for kids ranging in age from 10-18 and featured many of the top high school wrestlers in the state. The Windsor contingent enjoyed its best overall performance to date, setting records for most medals won by the club.“There was a lot of hard work from everyone involved, specifically from coaches Ken Coburn, Daryl Fredrickson and Ronnie Campos,” head coach Rich Carnation reported. “Not everyone hit the goals they set for the weekend, but lessons of humility were taken well.”Windsor boasted four individual state finalists, including Blake Fredrickson (2nd place, Greco Junior Division), Justin Campbell (2nd place, Greco Cadet Division), Ray Waller (2nd place, School Boy Freestyle Division), Kaeden Timmins (2nd place, Freestyle School Boy Division).Other top finishers in the Greco Division were Brennan Brown (4th place), Jonny Fredrickson 5th place), Tony Russotti (6th place) and Jacob Campos (8th place cadet, 7th place junior). The list of medalists in the Freestyle Division included Austin Fredrickson (3rd place), Isaiah Rubio (5th place), Ricky Campos (6th place), Dylan Webb (6th place) and Remy Lagourgue (8th place). “A few of our wrestlers competed in their own age category as well as the next age higher and had extraordinary success,” Carnation said. “Justin Campbell reached the Cadet finals before wrestling up to the Junior Division with a sprained rib cage, and Jacob Campos, a WHS freshman, placed 8th in the Cadet Division and threw his hat in the ring for the Junior Division, where he finished in 7th place.”Based on their final state placing, double All-American Blake Fredrickson and Windsor High School teammates Brennan Brown and Justin Campbell all qualified for the National Wrestling Tournament in Fargo North Dakota in July.  “The future looks bright as there were a lot of our younger stars beginning to let their light shine bright across the state of California with some impressive performances,” Carnation said. “Our kids and coaches will continue to work on improving each wrestler’s skills and having fun being with our friends, working hard and enjoying the journey together.”
