Cloverdale High School baseball and softball teams began the league season in winning fashion last week, with each team logging key victories.

Whatever the result of the year’s first gridiron game at Rec Park, the halftime period is worth its weight in gold—in the form of a giant check written out in the amount of $74,160 to the high school’s athletics programs...

Their invitation hinged on being one of the top three Division 5 teams at the North Coast meet last weekend, Nov. 22, and the team pulled it off – finishing in third place behind the expected winner San Francisco University and Convent & Stuart Hall, also of San Francisco.

That the sport of badminton is again being played in high school gyms around the area is due in large measure to the efforts of Scott Bischof. A former competitor and founder of the World Badminton Museum, he introduced the sport at several schools including Healdsburg.

This year’s girls Greyhounds Varsity Volleyball team finished with a 7-20 record overall, fifth in their league at 3-7. But that never stopped the team from coming out and playing with a vibrancy that only high school girls volleyball can exhibit.

“Greatest loss of my career,” Coach Mike Domenichelli said. “The players gave it everything they had. The crowd was electric and it was like playing at Yankee Stadium. It was just unfortunate that someone had to lose.”

Scott Weidemier is trying to bring wrestling back to Healdsburg High School, with a team of 15 inexperienced student-athletes competing at the JV level, and hopes to build a varsity team next year.

Seemingly under the radar, while basketball playoffs stretched the late season and heavy rains kept students and parents indoors, spring sports nonetheless got underway at area high schools this past month.

At the upcoming Chamber of Commerce mixer on Feb. 22, attendees will get the opportunity to explore a brand new asset in the community—Cloverdale High School’s new Technology Center, known colloquially as the maker space.
