“Operation Christmas” Committee Prepares Cakes for First Shipment

Thirteen members of the “Operation Christmas” committee were present Thursday night to prepare the first batch of fruit cakes which will be shipped to local servicemen and members of Healdsburg’s Adopted Battalion. Approximately 63 cakes were prepared and cooked Thursday night. A testing batch, prepared on Thursday, September 20, was given the final approval. The 2-pound cakes are baked in the can, sealed hot and kept fresh and free from staleness and mildew. It was discovered that it was unnecessary to place wax paper in the cans thus eliminating a great deal of work.

Another cooking session will take place tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the home-making room of the high school. Eight students from Mrs. Mary Üboldi’s Social Living class and 6 students from Earl Osborn’s History class will be present tonight to help wrap the cakes for shipment. Donations to “Operation Christmas” have been received during the past week, but funds as well as walnuts and dried fruits are still needed.

Chiquita Rd. Annexation Before LAFCO

The county Local Agency Formation Commission will consider the annexation request by Chiquita Enterprises today for 100 acres adjoining the western boundaries of the city. The LAFCO meeting begins at 3 p.m. in the Board of Supervisors meeting room at the county administration center.

The Chiquita Road annexation has received the recommendation of the Healdsburg Planning Commission and City Council. It has met opposition, however, from residents in the area. They believe it will encourage further expansion of the city west of the freeway, which they oppose. Proponents say the area has no farming potential and is therefore better suited for development than other areas where prime farm land would have to be sacrificed. They say Chiquita is the natural growth area for the city, which is hemmed in by geographical boundaries elsewhere, or by an earthquake fault. No development plans have been filed by Chiquita Enterprises for the area.

The Healdsburg Library and Historical Society is open Wednesday-Sunday, 11am to 4pm, at 211 Matheson St. healdsburgmuseum.org
