What will your kids be doing this summer?
Painting, pottery, swimming and science are just a few of the many activities available to youth this summer throughout Sonoma County. Wondering what to do with the kids while school is out? Local organizations have a plan to keep them busy and stay stimulated.
The trouble with texting :)
Who hasn't been tripped up by the slip of a finger while texting with family or been infuriated with ducking autocorrect? Who hasn’t mistakenly wished for the death of their grandfather in a text chain with a sibling and then found themselves exploring options for doing so? That's the premise of 'The Burdens,' the play now on stage at The 222...
THE FISHING REPORT: The Klamath is coming
Actually the Klamath Fall season might have already begun. I
The Fishing Report: Tough steel heading continues
This has been, without a doubt, the most difficult steelhead season I have ever experienced. Usually, I am good for 20 or more fish landed and often released in a year and I am just a part-timer. Guys in the know, who have the time, should be able to land 30 or more fish in a season. One experienced angler I know named Robbie is usually good for 50 fish in a good season, but this year he has managed only five. I tend to fish around Healdsburg and so I have missed out on a lot of the action below Guerneville, but a quick check with Scott at Kings has pretty much confirmed that they are experiencing the same kind of thing down there. Fish are moving but not holding. Guys are getting fish when a pod moves through and if they are lucky enough to be where they are at that moment. This is a far cry from last year when the water was clear and the fish had to hold up.
Leave No Trace
Debra Granik directed her cinematographer Michael McDonough to open her new film Leave No Trace with National Geographic-style shots of a verdant Oregon rainforest. There, among all the shades of green, we eventually distinguish a hooded-jacket-wearing figure ... no, it is two figures, carefully making their way through the dense undergrowth.
Winter Festival in the Jazz Town by the River
The Healdsburg Jazz Winter Festival runs from Thursday, Jan. 30, to Sunday, Feb. 2, with shows at the Paul Mahder Gallery, Spoonbar, Montage, the Michel-Schlumberger winery—even St. Paul’s Catholic Church, where Stella Heath’s tribute to Ella Fitzgerald will take place Saturday afternoon. (Heath performs locally year-round, but this Feb. 1 show is already sold out.)
The Fishing Report: Politics threaten salmon future
King salmon continue to make their way to the Golden Gate or to the Klamath in waves and as a result, scores of salmon off of our Sonoma coast have been more sporadic than the solid action we had all July. Saturday out of Bodega Bay, sport boats landed very few – and then on Sunday, the action reportedly increased markedly with several boats reporting limits of large king salmon to 40 pounds.
