Off the Top of My Head Communication Skills
For the new year I am going to concentrate on better communication. Communication is the cornerstone of any good relationship. And, I’m worried about my long-term relationship with my wife. Our hearing isn’t what it used to be and when she’s talking I’m not always hearing.
Off the Top of My Head: Have we lived through worse?
I was talking with a friend and he mentioned that although these are bad times politically we baby boomers have lived through worse. He reminded me of the 1960s: A president assassinated, his brother and presidential candidate assassinated; a civil rights movement that ignited race riots in most of the major cities in the U.S. and the best known civil rights leader in the nation killed.
Cannabis Country: Looking back at 2017
It’s the end of the year and time to look back at the 2017 cannabis world in Sonoma County. More marijuana was grown and harvested here than ever before, even after calculating the marijuana lost either directly or indirectly to the October fires. At a large grow site near Kenwood, fire burned greenhouses and marijuana; the owners wasted no time rebuilding and replanting.
Cannabis Country — 4/20: Big Day for Cannabis at Local Dispensary
The “big day” is coming. No, this “big day” is not the day to file income tax returns. Nor is it Mother’s Day that’s celebrated this year on May 14. In this instance the “big day” is April 20, known to marijuana smokers, growers...
Decoding Teens
This morning as I was driving my kids to school I noticed something. My two teenagers looked like zombies (not to be mean, of course). They both had managed to groom themselves and put clean clothes on, but they did not look refreshed from the night before. They had dark circles under their eyes, and at best, I got mumbled goodbyes as the car doors shut. Then I look in my review mirror at my 9 year old. In contrast, she is bright eyed, happy and energized. And the realization hits me. My teens stayed up last night....those little buggers didn't get into bed on time and it definitely showed this morning.
In need of documentaries
If a single picture is worth a thousand words — as the old saying goes — what is the worth of even the shortest of documentary films, shot at the equivalent of 16 frames per second? (An eight-minute short has 7,680 individual pics.) We dare say, “priceless.”
Spirit of Sonoma
For those born here and for the rest of us who now claim Sonoma County as our home, we share a sense of pride and place we like to call the spirit of Sonoma.
Market Report: Getting back to the market
We’ve had two weeks of farmers markets as I write this, and it’s such a pleasure to be back. I’ve missed all of you, and love how we’re able to reconnect despite masks, gloves and hand sanitizer.
The View from Here: Voting
Among the scads of poll reports I have heard recently one especially confounded me. The question was “Are you going to vote in the coming election?” and according to the poll a large number of respondents said “No” Next Question. “If you did vote who would you vote for?” Answer. “Probably Obama.”

Local ‘rock star’ on art tour
For Alexander Valley sculptor T Barny, it’s about more than just about the stone. “It’s a way scientists or astronomers envision the universe as being infinite, but finite,” he says. “It just keeps going, keeps going, keeps going.” The concepts of art and topology animate him.
