When I was a teenager, my dad would always wait up for me if I went out at night on the weekends. Without fail, he would be watching TV and the second he heard my key in the lock he would spring up from his chair and say goodnight.

Everybody likes to yell at their TVs when the news comes on in the evening, and people can’t help bashing the news sources they disagree with the most. Either you like CNN and The New York Times or you are a FOX follower and are convinced The Washington Post is full of “fake news.”

The Healdsburg Certified Farmers’ Market ended for the season Nov. 25, but I thought I’d write one more column to close out the season, and then will take a break until April, a month before we open for 2018.

Years ago, a few weeks before Christmas, our friend and neighbor Jessie King rose up in church and appealed for us to bring shoeboxes filled with combs and hair brushes and little toys for the severely handicapped children in the state hospital near Glen Ellen. She said many of these children are all but forgotten and never receive Christmas presents. She said she would like the gifts placed on the communion table so they could be blessed before she took them to the hospital.

This month, with the fires behind us, I’d like to talk a little about backing up your data.

100 years ago – December 6, 1917

The holiday shopping season is here, and the best gift you can give merchants is to shop in Healdsburg.

The United States has lost its way, lost its morals, lost its standing in the world, obviously lost a bet in a cosmic game of truth or dare. I dare you to point out a president who has eviscerated the reputation of the U.S. so quickly and so profoundly.
