Cultivating Community

Plantings for foodies by Windsor Garden Club

Are we ready?

Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can't ride you unless your back is bent.”

From the Library

Winter greetings from the Healdsburg Library. We continue to work preparing for additional open hours as a result of the passage of Measure Y. As you may have heard, the library system is hiring over 30 new positions across the county. We anticipate many additional positions opening up over the next year as we work to improve library services and continue to expand open hours. In addition, we face an uncommon opportunity to improve our collections. As always, we wish to provide the most helpful information we can. If you have suggestions — such as magazine subscriptions you wish we would provide — we are all ears. We still can’t provide everything, but we’ll try to grant requests if we can.

Floods and droughts

Who was that praying for all the rain? Are you done yet? Wait, maybe we should remind ourselves where we live and what our flood and drought history tells us.

Decoding Teenagers: Chore Wars

My younger sister was the slob of my family when growing up. I hate to say it, but she was. She simply didn’t care about where she left her stuff: backpack, shoes, dirty dishes. The house was constantly littered with her things. Over and over my mom would ask her to pick up after herself but my sister never seemed to catch on to the idea of cleaning. One day my mom had finally had enough. Quite frankly I think we all had. So, she came up with an idea that would forever change my sister’s messy habits.

Wheel of Light, January 2017

The New Year begins on a challenging note with four planets lining up in a T-square formation during January and February. This culminates in a transiting Grand Square around the full Moon on January 12. The main players in the T-square are Jupiter in Libra, Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn. Mars transiting through Aries joins them in February. The Grand Square adds the Sun in Capricorn and the Moon in Cancer. All the signs involved are cardinal, meaning that the main problem could be too much impulsive choices and actions. The way out can come from being more deliberate in planning.

Yale Whiffenpoofs

Yale Whiffenpoofs to land on Raven stage Sunday

The very name “Whiffenpoofs” is whimsical, but followers of the collegiate music space know that the repertoire and reputation of this Yale University a cappella group is anything but laughable. Sure there are old Yale drinking songs, certainly a bit of jazz-era energy, as well as more modern pop. But are they classical? And what exactly is a “whiffenpoof” anyway?
Happy filmgoers await the previews.
