Memorializing With Merriment

Healdsburg’s Plaza was alive with Dia de los Muertos celebrations recently. Pathways in the plaza were chalked with flor de muerto, marigold petals were strewn about, exhibits were on display, and vintage cars and tricked-out trucks from Chicano Truckin were parked on the  perimeter.  Some...

An Unforgettable Elephant-headed God

Over a period of two years, pictures of this sculpture surrounded by a hedge at the crossing of two streets in Healdsburg failed to make the cut.  I’ve wanted to write about it. I walk or drive by often. Several attempts to find the right...

Autumn Leaves Changing Color East and West

Leaves turning color. Autumn is a splendid time of year. Harvests are in. Halloween is on the horizon. Thanksgiving draws near. Time to take stock.  Hmmmm? What does that mean, “take stock?” Websters says “to carefully think about something in order to make a decision...

Still Life With Stone and Pear

Sometimes, it’s just a nice thing to do. Stare at artwork. I’m not sure why it should be so, but it is for me. Art, particularly sculpture, is a touch stone—oops. No, ahhhhhhh. Pun intended and achieved! Bada bing pause. Sculptures are a little more visceral...

Art of the Yard

Yard art around town comes in many forms. Whimsical. Creative. Unique. Here are a fun few. These cacti sporting sunglasses and straw hats are out on Dry Creek Road. The water-saving rock spiral lawn with pink flamingos is along University Avenue. If you look closely,...

Grape Harvest in Gear, From Champagne to Cabernet

The traffic sign on Dry Creek Road reminds me farming takes place here every day. And, isn’t it glorious to live in an area that is grounded? Literally grounded, making a living from the earth. If you’ve been on a local road behind a tractor...

Never Forget the Elephants

This is a picture of an elephant walking along my windowsill.  Even though this elephant is stationary and made of clay, it reminds me of elephants grazing in Thailand. The soft light created by a dusty screen produces a haze similar to the jungle-like mist...

Honoring Labor

Labor Day’s long weekend winds up summer. Vacations end. School starts. Days are progressively shorter. Autumn comes to mind and fall colors slowly show.  Labor Day honors the American worker. The U.S. was the first country to establish “labor day,” and the first parade took...

This Week in H’burg… …Summer Comfort

Out to summer dinner in Healdsburg the other night, a few of us sat around a table set on a driveway. Yeah, it’s an H’burg thing in the pandemic. Passersby walking dogs chatted, bicyclists waved.  Oh my goodness, the fresh Moroccan fare from start...

This Week in H’burg… Words for the Wise

Ahhhhh. The sweet smell of petrichor last week was a welcome joy. Petrichor? Yes, petrichor: the pleasant, earthy odor that follows gentle rain after a dry spell. Cool word, isn’t it? Pictured above are a few drops highlighting the Crocosmia crocosmilflora, or Coppertips Montbretia....

‘Angels’ lands at Raven Performing Arts

:Every Sunday matinee we do a post-show discussion with the audience, so they get a chance to make comments and ask questions of the actors. We saw there were a lot of people who were quite moved and quite touched by the play. So the opening weekend could not have gone better, as far as I’m concerned," said director Steven David Martin.
