As the months roll by, the Healdsburg Library Modernization Project continues along its steady path. Week by week, the contractors complete one task after another, bringing us closer to the reopening of the 139 Piper St. library we all know and love.

The Windsor Town Council had a chance to say yes to community and say no to money on March 7.

I recently received an email from a reputable reporter who works for a reputable newspaper. The reporter said she reads my Cannabis Country columns and wanted to know what I knew about organized crime in the marijuana industry. Her email to me was prompted by a conversation she had with an elected official who claimed that “Bulgarian organized crime runs cannabis in Humboldt County, Laotian organized crime runs cannabis in Trinity and Cal Fire wouldn't go into those areas without law enforcement accompanying them.”

The diverse community of faith in Windsor has been broadened with the arrival of the Hallel Fellowship in early December. Hallel is part of the modern Messianic Judaism religious movement that combines the fundamentals of Christianity—belief and faith in Jesus as the Messiah, creator, savior and the only way to eternal life—with elements of Judaism.

In 1950: "Because the effects of marijuana produce criminal tendencies in the user, Lt. Nicolini advised his listeners to contact Chief of Police Al Giorgi if they should see anyone with the identifying marijuana cigarettes of brown paper which are sealed at both ends, or if they should discover any strange and unusual plant. By doing this, stated Lt. Nicolini, every citizen can do his part in stamping out the traffic in this vicious plant."

The Healdsburg Library is not the only local public resource undergoing a renovation this spring. The historic Healdsburg Museum, located ironically in the former Carnegie Library building on Matheson, closed in mid-January and will remain closed until late March or early April for renovation.
