All together now
Our shared disdain for PG&E turning the lights out on us while we were running from the threat of the Kincade wildfire is not the only thing that should be uniting us right now. This time there was no loss of life. This time we “only” lost 141 homes in Sonoma County, nothing close to the 5,600 torched by the Tubbs fire in 2017. But this time the economic impact in evacuation costs, days of lost work, a week of lost business revenues, canceled trips to our Wine Country and possibly the permanent closure of some local businesses is much more widespread.
Country Roads: Retreat, renewal and retrieval
This morning, among all the amazing writing which has emerged from the ashes of the past week, I have to add one small page. It is not my choice to write, as I really have nothing to report of any dramatic nature, since, by sheer luck of the wind Healdsburg and Alexander Valley coughed a bit but didn’t burn. However, deadlines are deadlines, and it is Country Roads time.

Return to the Russian River
When Jake Messing stood in front of the mural he had just completed for Russian Riverkeeper on the north side of the nonprofit’s headquarters at 139 Healdsburg Ave., he had finished more than another mural. He had made a return to the source from the sea himself, like the salmon he portrayed.
