With reactions akin to those of Mahomet watching the mountain come to him, the Healdsburg Fire Department tumbled out on Center street to quench a furiously blazing lumber truck that, spouting flame and smoke, rolled up to the firehouse for a spot of fire suppression Monday afternoon. 

"Visitors from California, the U.S. and around the world come to Healdsburg—yet our Plaza has no visible welcome or central place to answer their questions," begins one of two Letters we're publishing this week...

Famous and quirky chess players include: Jose Capablanca (1888-1942), a famous Cuban grandmaster who continuously smoked cigars while playing; Alexander Alakine (1892-1946), who brought and petted his cat named “Chess”; and Bobby Fischer (1943–2008) who had all of his dental fillings removed to escape radio transmissions.

The Healdsburg Museum is grateful for five decades of outstanding community support. We are celebrating our 50th anniversary all year with free special exhibitions and programming. With your support, we will continue to elevate local history for the next 50 years and beyond.

Members of the Friends of the Healdsburg Library (FoHL) were pleased to see so many people eager to check out their book sale last week. FoHL book sales often mark our busiest weeks of the year, and this was no exception.

It’s the 77th year of Formula 1 racing. It’s also a year with a new “formula.” What’s a formula? Great question.

The fine Kruse building, which is located on the south side of the Plaza, is about completed, and those who have rented stores and offices have moved or are moving in. The building is a substantial ornament to the town, being modern and up-to-date, constructed of the best brick to be obtained in this State.

Redwoods are magnificent trees whose beauty we get to experience in Sonoma County and Healdsburg. These beauties are set in the picnic grove at Riverfront Regional Park. The park includes three miles of trails for walking through redwoods plus boating, hiking, horseback riding and picnicking.

From 1956 Chet Huntley anchored NBC’s nightly news, until in 1970 he retired to help start Big Sky Resort in his home state of Montana. The resort is located in the beautiful Gallatin Gateway area, which is an entry into Yellowstone. In such a remote Montana location, Big Sky got off to a rocky start (pun done).
