Remembering: A meditation on Memorial Day
The Memorial Day holiday has become a day with dual and contrasting sets of activities and mindsets. Memorial Day is both a solemn occasion for remembering and honoring our war dead and it is also the “unofficial” beginning of warm weather picnics, outdoor activities and family gatherings.
Decoding Teenagers: I’m bored
When I was growing up I remember often complaining to my parents that I was bored. They would always say, "Go outside, ride your bike, put your roller skates on." And I did just that; I would ride around my street or lace up my skates. It passed the time and helped ease my boredom. Those memories of my teen nostalgia got me thinking. The world seemed simpler then, less chaotic. What I wouldn't do to transport my teenagers back to the ‘80s so they could get a glimpse of life less complicated. So they could truly understand what my teen years looked like.
Decoding Teenagers: Mother’s Day
Happy belated Mother’s Day to all you moms out there. I hope your day was filled with love and laughter. It’s truly a day to admire your children and be proud of all the work you do on a daily basis. As moms we wear many hats. My hats range from nurse, to psychologist, chef, confidant and personal assistant to name a few. Children, especially teenagers, don’t really understand all that motherhood entails. As you know, it’s the hardest job in the world. On Sunday, I officially took the day off.
Off the Top of My Head: The year of the woman
Happy New Year. I love the New Year. I love it because I like new beginnings. There is, for me, great hope and optimism when I start anything new, so the New Year excites me greatly.

Return to the Russian River
When Jake Messing stood in front of the mural he had just completed for Russian Riverkeeper on the north side of the nonprofit’s headquarters at 139 Healdsburg Ave., he had finished more than another mural. He had made a return to the source from the sea himself, like the salmon he portrayed.
