Christmas Lights in the Sky

The picture above is a full arcing rainbow, portrayed in last week’s Photo of the Week dropping behind vineyards and trees, as if painted by John Constable. Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus, who claimed to be the light. He asked that people “love...

Let’s Book It: Book Groups

Four library book groups are again meeting this month, and what wonderful selections to discuss. “The Last Bookaneer” is a swashbuckling tale about greed, highlighting thieves, spies, smugglers and tricksters, whereas “The Secret Place” is a terrifying mystery, featuring giddy, devious and untrustworthy schoolgirls. The middle schoolers will be enjoying the charming graphic novels “Awkward” and “Brave,” full of humor, realism and kindness.

Commentary: Stewarding the electronic dinosaur

When discarded, the toxicity of electronic waste functions as an eroding agent on clean water, healthy soil and fresh air. The impacts of improperly disposed e-waste are measurable, harmful and applicable on a global scale. Let’s Book It

I grew up listening to music by the Beach Boys, and wanted so much to join them and become a Surfer Girl. A drawback:  I lived in Chicago. But I could channel surf on the TV, couch surf as I got older when visiting with friends in other cities and also web surf when shopping for the holidays. Now, looking forward to the new year it appears that our library invites us all to Adventure Surf! It does not matter when or where you live in Sonoma County, opportunities to experience joy and accomplishment are offered to all ages. Check out the events listed below, and get on board. And you don’t have to worry about sharks!

Gifts for ourselves

What links the outcomes of recent news stories about schoolteacher pay and strikes, SMART train expansion, mental health services, Kincade Fire recovery, expanded fire protection services, future Highway 101 improvements and happier holidays? Would you believe local shopping dollars?

Someday We’ll Laugh About This … Right? Tar-jhay for the valet

Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend an event put on by a group from San Francisco that had raised money for my son’s school. The group – the Young Presidents Organization – had heard about Anova’s school building burning down in the Tubbs fire, and they wanted to do something to help the staff and students in the recovery process.

‘Angels’ lands at Raven Performing Arts

:Every Sunday matinee we do a post-show discussion with the audience, so they get a chance to make comments and ask questions of the actors. We saw there were a lot of people who were quite moved and quite touched by the play. So the opening weekend could not have gone better, as far as I’m concerned," said director Steven David Martin.
