December is a strange month in prep sports—both girls and boys teams are playing basketball and soccer games, but a two-week holiday break kicks in before the conference matches begin. That changes this week, as the local teams meet their Redwood rivals in games starting at home and on the road.

The highlight is the girls soccer team, which remains unbeaten with a 5-0 record as of Jan. 6. That is at risk on Wednesday this week as St. Helena comes to town. On paper their 2-4-1 record doesn’t indicate a challenge, but games are played on grass—and wet grass at that—so the results won’t be known until after press time.

Boys soccer has had a tougher go of it, now with a 2-3-3 record. Home games are played at 7pm on Tuesday and Friday this week, against Ukiah and Cloverdale. League favorite Analy is currently 10-0-1; Healdsburg’s first match with them is still weeks away, on Jan. 22 in Sebastopol.

In basketball the boys broke a six-game losing streak on Saturday, Jan. 3, defeating Cloverdale 63-57 in an exciting game on the Eagles’ court. Sophomore Teague Jasper has been the top point-getter for the Hounds, though the reappearance of junior Frank Rea on the court has brought another threat to the game. He suffered an MCL injury in October playing football and has been rehabilitating since.

In the Cloverdale game last weekend, Jasper led team scoring with 20 points and five rebounds, while Rea turned in 12 points with six rebounds, his dynamic athleticism seemingly unaffected by the layoff. Junior Ethan Overdorf was a big contributor as well, with 11 points and another five rebounds. Healdsburg is now 6-9.

Redwood league play for the Hounds begins this week with road games against Ukiah (9-6) on Wednesday and St. Vincent (4-4) on Friday. The next home game is a non-league match on Saturday (5:30pm) against Clear Lake. The first Redwood game at home is on Jan. 14 (7:30pm) against Rancho Cotate (8-4 to date).

Girls basketball has recently been a strong sport for Healdsburg in the North Bay-Redwood conference and, like the boys team, the girls hit a rough patch in December with a five-game losing streak. That ended on Dec. 30 with a win over Analy, 40-31, followed on Jan. 3, 2026, with a victory over Fort Bragg.

While they were 6-9 leading up to this week’s games, the NBL-Redwood games didn’t begin until Tuesday night with a game against Elsie Allen (5-7) in Santa Rosa. That proved to be a third win in a row, a 48-14 walkover against the Lobos. A home game against Ukiah is coming up Thursday at 7:30pm at Smith Robinson Gym.
