The Geyserville varsity softball team is one of the best kept
secrets in the North Bay this year, securing its second straight
league title last week in a 11-0 romp over Rincon Vally
Christian.
Sophomore pitcher Vanessa Flores finished the league season in
style, tossing a five-inning no-hitter, while claiming 10 strikeout
victims. In fact, just one walk stood between Flores and a perfect
game.
On Sunday, the team landed a number six seed in the NCS B
playoffs, setting up a first round game at Ferndale on May 23.
Should the Lady Bronchos win, they will play the winner of the
Urban-Laytonville game on May 25 (site TBD). The complete list of
NCS B playoff teams in order of seeding are: Hoopa Valley, Urban,
Ferndale, Branson, Calistoga, Geyserville, Laytonville and College
Prep.
The Lady Bronchos (6-1, 10-3) had a much tougher road to the NCL
ll South championship this year, since the league was re-aligned to
include bigger schools like Tomales, Calistoga and RVC. After a
slow start, the ladies bore down to finish league on a six game win
streak.
³This may be the best softball team we¹ve had since I¹ve been
here,² said Geyserville coach Mark Spaulding. ³We were probably a
little hungrier last year, but our double-header loss to Calistoga
early in the season was sort of a wake-up call for us and we¹ve
played much better down the stretch.²
The Lady Bronchos feature a fearsome line-up that includes
shortstop Lacey Burton (.636 BA, 17 RBIs, 11 SBs), one of the top
players in the North Bay. She is joined by pitchers Maria Gonzalez
(1.36 ERA) and Vanessa Flores (.413 BA), second baseman Nacomi
Spaulding (.394 BA, 15 RBIs, 10 SBs), catcher Ruby Reyes,
infielders Jessica Farmer and Desiree DeLaVega, outfielders JJ
Smith, Amanda Ward, Amy Navara, Diana Mercado, Jocelyn Hale and
Vere Barajas.
