The Healdsburg track team turned in one of its all-time best
performances on Saturday at the North Coast Section Championships
hosted by San Marin High School.
The ³Running Dogs² varsity boys¹ squad finished an outstanding
third overall out of some 25 participating teams. Junior Daniel
Erdman was the top finisher for the Hounds, capturing a first-place
medal in both the shot put and discus. Erdman¹s discus toss of 142¹
7² was a personal best for the season.
Senior Tim Murphy struck gold in the 800-meter race, lowering
his own HHS record to a lightning fast 1:55.12. In one of the most
anticipated match-ups of the day, Murphy edged Lower Lake¹s Mike
Perez by a narrow margin to capture the 800 title.
³Being able to run against Perez definitely gave me extra
motivation to win,² said Murphy. ³I¹m taking it one meet at a time,
but I¹m hoping to get to the State again this year.²
Other MOC qualifiers included: Luke Wilson (shot put), Justin
Bingham (110-hurdles), Claire Frazer (100, 300-hurdles) and Deirdra
Denmon (discus). The boys¹ 4×400 relay team of Bingham, Alex
Taylor, Jesse Webster and Murphy also qualified for the MOC.
All competing athletes at the NCS meet had qualified a week
earlier by virtue of a top-four finish in their respective events
at their league championships. Each was after a top-seven spot at
NCS to move on to this week¹s Meet of Champions at Edwards Stadium
in Berkeley. A top-four finish at the MOC would mean a trip to the
coveted State Track and Field Championships at Cerritos College in
Norwalk on June 2 and 3.
Below are the top Healdsburg finishers from the NCS
