Build The Wall

Donald Trump wants to build a wall across the United States’ southern border and make the Mexican government pay for it. He wants to keep out rapists and illegal immigrants. Others want us to put up barriers and keep Syrian refugees out of the country. Some of our fellow Americans even want to register or deport all Muslims, including those who are American citizens.

Commentary: What does SDAT really say about the Cerri site?

COMMENTARY — Editor’s note: This is the first in a two-part commentary discussing the Cerri/Purity building.

Cityscape: From the city manager

At the Aug, 20 Healdsburg City Council meeting, the council tackled the question of how many hotel rooms should be allowed around the Plaza within the Plaza Retail District, how many hotel rooms should be allowed in the Downtown Commercial District and whether the city should require all new hotels to provide affordable housing as part of any new project.

Country Roads: Retreat, renewal and retrieval

This morning, among all the amazing writing which has emerged from the ashes of the past week, I have to add one small page. It is not my choice to write, as I really have nothing to report of any dramatic nature, since, by sheer luck of the wind Healdsburg and Alexander Valley coughed a bit but didn’t burn. However, deadlines are deadlines, and it is Country Roads time.

Country Roads: Fat trees and spiral loops

Clear communication is the key to precise understanding. Well, sort of. Last week at market amongst the charred redwoods that once provided a bit of a sound and visual barrier between Highway 101 and LBC parking lot, my market neighbor and I had a conversation about iPhones and their electronic relatives.

Commentary: A win-win situation

Commentary — The opponents of building a new community pavilion and farmers market continue their effort to derail the process. They even had the gall to ask the Foley Family Foundation to spend their generous $7 million donation in another location or for another project. If they were to succeed, an expansive community effort — including an impressively strong petition — would end in civic embarrassment. They would be responsible if the Foley Family Foundation retracts its gift, and offers it to a more grateful, forward-thinking city.

Yale Whiffenpoofs

Yale Whiffenpoofs to land on Raven stage Sunday

The very name “Whiffenpoofs” is whimsical, but followers of the collegiate music space know that the repertoire and reputation of this Yale University a cappella group is anything but laughable. Sure there are old Yale drinking songs, certainly a bit of jazz-era energy, as well as more modern pop. But are they classical? And what exactly is a “whiffenpoof” anyway?
Happy filmgoers await the previews.
