America’s football

Are you ready for some football? The NFL television season opened last weekend, and the Friday Night Lights have been flipped on at many (but not all) local high school fields. All across America the sights and sounds of these pigskin rituals are marking the changing of seasons from carefree summer to earnest autumn.

Commentary: Libraries equal strong communities

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a library? Some people picture a big building full of books, magazines, maybe a few CDs and DVDs. Others recall visiting a library to look up resources for job hunting, research a term paper or peruse college catalogs and travel guides.

COMMENTARY: How does an undocumented immigrant become a legal resident?

At its March 22 meeting, the Windsor Democratic Club heard from Maureen McSorley, a Windsor immigration attorney, about the intricacies of becoming a legal resident.

Castles under attack

The saying “a man’s home is his castle” is so old it predates gender correctness. It means that no matter how humble, unadorned or unesteemed a man’s (or woman’s) house might be, it is his to call her own. It is his to satisfy the needs for safe shelter, desired comfort and life’s big investment. No matter the physical address, it is where he is king (or queen.)

Counting the homeless

Cold and wet winter days in Sonoma County always flush out news accounts of flooding, fallen trees and dangerous driving conditions. And then there are the stories and reminders of people who are homeless, facing bone-chilling nights on the street, hoping for a cot at an emergency shelter or at least a hot meal or two the next day.

2015: A very violent year

There are many possible labels we could put on the time capsule for the year 2015, but one undeniable title would be “A Very Violent Year.” This is not because of a few highly profiled terrorist attacks. It is because of the mass killings we did to ourselves, a total of 353  multiple-victim shootings that left 12,223 dead people across our bloody urban, small town and rural landscape. This total included 62 attacks on schools, supposedly the safest places in our society.

Country Roads: No longer in service

Yesterday I made two reservations on The Empire Builder Amtrak to bring my daughter Sarah and I to northern Montana in mid-January. This is a repeat trip that we enjoyed very much when my husband, Joel, was alive. We traveled to see his family and we boarded the Coast Starlight in Davis, and got off at the small prairie town of Shelby, Montana, just east of Glacier Park and Browning.

Yale Whiffenpoofs

Yale Whiffenpoofs to land on Raven stage Sunday

The very name “Whiffenpoofs” is whimsical, but followers of the collegiate music space know that the repertoire and reputation of this Yale University a cappella group is anything but laughable. Sure there are old Yale drinking songs, certainly a bit of jazz-era energy, as well as more modern pop. But are they classical? And what exactly is a “whiffenpoof” anyway?
Happy filmgoers await the previews.
