Country Roads: No longer in service
Yesterday I made two reservations on The Empire Builder Amtrak to bring my daughter Sarah and I to northern Montana in mid-January. This is a repeat trip that we enjoyed very much when my husband, Joel, was alive. We traveled to see his family and we boarded the Coast Starlight in Davis, and got off at the small prairie town of Shelby, Montana, just east of Glacier Park and Browning.
Managing trash and litter
Do you like seeing trash and litter on our sidewalks, streets, yards and waterways? We didn’t think so. Not only do our open spaces look better when they are clean and tidy, it contributes to a healthier environment.
From the library
We’re nearly through July and the library is hopping with activity. The Summer Reading Programs are nearing their exciting conclusions. It’s been a great year for signups, with nearly 200 elementary school-age participants as well as dozens of teens and adults. One more week of events awaits. Don’t forget to come in and claim your prizes. In particular, don’t miss the final Mad Science Spectacular for ages five and up—learn how to make movie special effects sounds and watch how science can create super heroes. This extravaganza will occur on July 30 at 11 a.m.
Newsroom Notebook: Title Case
Everyone has things they love or hate about their jobs. Me, I love writing headlines. A headline can make or break a story, which is to say it can make a reader pause to read a story or pass it by.
Mark West Compass: Renewal
I’m excited to write this article. Though it’s the end of the year, this story is about a new beginning for the Mark West schools. All the schools want everyone to know that Mark West Union School District is alive and well and waiting for the new group of kids to register for kindergarten.
Cannabis Country: Last harvest at Green Acre
The outdoor cannabis growing season, now more than half over, is rapidly approaching the harvest, which is the most exciting as well as the most perilous time of the year. Exciting because the plants are beautiful to behold; perilous because there’s the risk of rip-offs and arrests. Many factors, including the weather, determine when the harvest begins and ends, though there isn’t a grower who doesn’t fear heavy autumn rains and crave hot, dry days and warm nights.

Yale Whiffenpoofs to land on Raven stage Sunday
The very name “Whiffenpoofs” is whimsical, but followers of the collegiate music space know that the repertoire and reputation of this Yale University a cappella group is anything but laughable. Sure there are old Yale drinking songs, certainly a bit of jazz-era energy, as well as more modern pop. But are they classical? And what exactly is a “whiffenpoof” anyway?
