Yale Whiffenpoofs to land on Raven stage Sunday
The very name “Whiffenpoofs” is whimsical, but followers of the collegiate music space know that the repertoire and reputation of this Yale University a cappella group is anything but laughable. Sure there are old Yale drinking songs, certainly a bit of jazz-era energy, as well as more modern pop. But are they classical? And what exactly is a “whiffenpoof” anyway?

It’s about time a Michael Jackson tribute band showed up in town. “Rock With You – the Michael Jackson Experience” features two MJ tribute artists heading a 10-plus-piece live ensemble, claiming to be the only MJ tribute in the world to have 100% live vocals. There are some great production elements here. Director Emilie Talbot’s staging is clean and very effective for The 222’s unorthodox space. The costumes by Naomi Arnst are excellent. The choice of the yellow dress is especially perfect for clueing the audience into the setting of the show and the time period...

Sundays in the Plaza is an alternative to Tuesday’s big concert, from 1-3pm at the Plaza, this week featuring the Healdsburg Community Band. Gary Johnson will conduct big-band favorites, two-steps, marches, folk music, Broadway/movie music, a Spanish overture and the finale of the William Tell Overture. Free.
No stranger to ‘culture shock’ comes to Healdsburg
“I chose the name Mon Rovîa because at first when I was doing music, it was mainly for myself,” said the performer in a late-August interview. “But then I realized that I wanted to pursue music for other reasons outside of myself, like telling stories about the world and so many things that are going on, especially about my country and its history. Nobody really knows much about Liberia.”
