Healdsburg Happenings, Sept. 4 – 12
Pachanga! The city’s celebration of arts grants winners is Saturday Sept. 6 at the Healdsburg Plaza, starting at 5:30pm. This free and family friendly event shines a spotlight on the talented recipients of the Diversity in the Arts Grant as a Latin American fair with live music, dancers, photographers, visual artists and more.
Be good to bees
The weather is warm, flowers are blooming and the buzz around the county is coming from bees that have been collecting nectar and pollen all spring to make honey.
Healdsburg Chorus preparing for upcoming spring shows
The Healdsburg Chorus has several upcoming shows, including its first-ever performance in Sebastopol. The chorus will be performing in Sebastopol on April 24 and in Healdsburg on April 30 and May 1. The shows mark the return of the groups' spring shows, which in the last two years have been derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
THE FISHING REPORT: Tuna Time
Albacore Tuna fanatics are really chomping at the bit right now. It is that time of year when warm, blue, 58.5 degree water comes in close enough for sport boats to target these great eating fish. Typically anything inside of 50 miles is considered close but when the water gets into seven miles off of Carmel like it did last weekend, then there is some serious access for most boaters. Scores of five to 15 tuna per rod were reported with fish to 35 pounds. Wow! These fish really put up a great fight and, as already mentioned, are tremendous table fair.
Through the Garden Gate
Often quite warm, June is full of gardening events and blooming salvias. Depending on what kind of plants you grow, water down your garden and mulch it heavily with good organic compost. Don’t forget to leave soft, unmulched soil for the bees and other critters that need places to nest. I notice that the mourning doves love dust baths…they like loose, dry dusty soil in which to sunbathe. The dust is a natural mite repellent. Who needs chemicals when you have dirt!
