There are lots of big topics dominating the news these days. We’re getting pretty darn tired of most of them, like the omicron variant of the coronavirus, the open-shut door carousel at our local schools, renewed sheltering-in-place orders, a drought that comes with a tsunami warning and muddy feet and distant drumbeats about what’s being called “existential threats” to our democracy. But the biggest — and most real — current news topic is probably inflation, an economic menace we haven’t had to face for almost 40 years. 

Sebastopol service organizations, nonprofits and others gather to discuss community needs

Last week the city of Sebastopol and its economic vitality contractor, CoMission, hosted the Community Needs Summit, a gathering of representatives from local service organizations and nonprofits. The meeting featured in-depth panel discussions on food and housing, mental health and schools, environment and community enrichment, which revealed several key needs and facts.

Heads of schools prep for challenges

While the Kincade Fire did not damage the number of homes that the 2017’s fires did, its impacts were felt more directly on north county, with the communities of Windsor, Healdsburg and Geyserville being completely evacuated as the fire approached.

An exhibit of Healdsburg artist Marian Murphy’s abstract art is on display at the Cloverdale History Museum, until Dec. 1. After a career as a mother and secretary, Murphy at the age of 38, fell in love with photography. Studying at the Ohio Institute of Photography, she became a professional photographer and enjoyed her career as a portrait photographer in Healdsburg for 30 years.

Parents voice problems with school equity
