SLIDESHOW: Students walk out in Healdsburg and across Sonoma County

At 10 a.m., students poured from classrooms and into protest mode in communities throughout Sonoma County to demand action to prevent gun violence and to remember the 17 high school students and teachers who lost their lives last month in Florida. Commentary: Protect Felta Creek

On Nov. 17, Cal Fire approved a Timber Harvest Plan that will permit aggressive logging in the headwaters of Felta Creek, one of the last remaining native fish habitats in the entire Russian River watershed. Despite more than 130 letters of public concern from school board officers, the local fire department, concerned citizens, ecologists, nonprofit organizations and neighborhood associations, as well as elected officials including county supervisor James Gore and state senator Mike McGuire, Cal Fire gave the green light on THP 17-017 SON “Fox Meadow.”

Sebastopol’s Independence 4H holding tree-cycling fundraiser

Reindeers might help Santa put presents under the Christmas tree, but it’s the goats of Independence 4H that help recycle the trees once the holidays are over. This December Independence 4H is hosting a Goat Christmas Tree Recycling (tree-cycling) fundraiser. Independence 4H families will be collecting the trees in Sebastopol, Santa Rosa, Cotati and Rohnert Park and have a drop-off day as well at a small farm in Santa Rosa.
