Already buffeted by the recent years of business interruptions from wildfires, power outages and floods, it looks like some of Healdsburg’s downtown businesses are not going to survive the current pandemic-caused economic shutdown.

HUSD moving forward to explore ethnic studies program

The Healdsburg Unified School District, with full support from the school board of trustees, is planning to explore how to create and implement a districtwide ethnic studies program for all grade levels. The creation of a new curriculum can take years, however, the process will soon kick off with a preliminary meeting with the Acosta Educational Partnership, a group that works with local schools to aid in the process of establishing ethnic studies, and with community outreach.

Henry-1 assists with Goat Rock rescue

On Thursday afternoon, Oct. 1, Sonoma County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) helicopter Henry-1 rescued two people, one a child, from the water at Goat Rock State Beach.According to an announcement from the sheriff's office, Henry-1 responded to the beach after a report that a child had been swept out to sea. The additional person rescued had swam out to try and rescue the child."The H1 Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) configured the helicopter for a long line rescue and subsequently rescued the victim from the water," the announcement states. "Once on shore, (Henry-1) was reconfigured for medical transport and the victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries."The child was transported by the Bodega Bay Fire Department ambulance for non-life threatening injuries."This serves as an important reminder that our coastline, although beautiful and serene, demands the upmost vigilance and respect in order to avoid tragic accidents; such as we nearly saw today," the SCSO said.

The Rotary Club of Healdsburg Sunrise and several local elected officials in attendance honored four local teachers and a high school counselor at the Rotary Club’s annual teacher appreciation event, which was held last week via Zoom.

Windsor council slated to set date for special election

At their regular meeting Aug. 4, the Windsor Town Council is expected to pass two resolutions that will leave both filling a vacant council seat by a special election next year and modifying the mayoral selection process to the voters by special election on Nov. 2. The council will also continue the first reading of a more restrictive update to the town’s tobacco retailer license ordinance, taking into consideration complaints from business owners.
