UC Davis study warns salmon headed for extinction

The Russian River’s endangered salmon population faces near extinction this century if current environmental hazards go unchecked, according to a report last week to the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board.

City’s EV Program Charges Ahead

A total of 10 new charging stations are being installed, four on East Street and six in the lot between Healdsburg Avenue and Center Street. Their addition will bring city-owned charging stations to 24: There are currently 12 charging stations in the City Hall parking lot at 401 Grove St. and two more at 150 Branch Lane, in the Mill District.

Sprucing up the Plaza

City of Healdsburg public works employees replaced the pavers on the corner of the Plaza this week, removing roots underneath that were making the walkway uneven. Portions of the Plaza grass are also still closed for winter re-seeding that occurs annually to strengthen the turf after a summer of heavy use.

Bacteria in water

Bacteria are a natural part of the environment, but some bacteria like those found in human or animal waste can be a hazard when we are exposed to it in the rivers where we work and play. These microscopic single-celled organisms are found virtually everywhere, including water, soil, plants, animals and the human body. Bacteria provide numerous benefits to the environment, including the decomposition of organic matter, like breaking down leaves and plants to nourish the soil. Bacteria also serve several functions in the human body, including assisting with digestion, aiding the immune system and protecting against harmful and disease-causing invaders, known as pathogenic microbes.

Community comes out to clean Foss Creek

Trash time — Healdsburg community members, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Healdsburg 4H members came out with trash bags on Sept. 28 to help clean up Foss Creek. The event was part of creek week, a countywide effort to clean up waterways and the Russian River watershed. Teams spread out along Foss Creek to pick up trash. One team even found an abandoned bike and wooden pallet.
