How will Cloverdale’s next council member be selected?

This week, the Cloverdale City Council is interviewing five candidates who threw their hats into the ring to fill a vacant council seat that’s set to expire in December 2022. Those five candidates — Joe Palla, Eric Sanders, Maeta Emmons, Nicole Garcia-Hinchliffe and Jenny Candelaria-Orr — will be interviewed during the Cloverdale City Council meeting on June 9.

Sonoma County is on track to the orange tier but future vaccine allocations look low

Sonoma County is on course to move into the orange tier of the state’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy by the next week or so if case rates continue to decline and if state efforts to vaccinate those in disadvantaged communities continue to increase according to Sonoma County officials.

PG&E resource center opens at Guerneville School

As tens of thousands of Sonoma County residents prepare to have their power shut off as part of a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) from Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), Guerneville School (14630 Armstrong Woods Drive) is opening its doors to be one of a handful of Community Resource Centers (CRC) throughout the county.

County announces coastal reopening

Sonoma County will slide a bit deeper into its next phase of reopening this week. On Tuesday, June 2, Sonoma County Public Health Officer Dr. Sundari Mase announced that she’s OK’d the reopening of coastal parking lots and daytime visiting hours at beaches. The county has also indicated that it plans to allow additional businesses to open or expand their operation in the coming days.

Not out of the tunnel yet

A month ago, all of Sonoma County’s “public life” was put off limits. No schools, locked parks, barricaded beaches, no dining out or casual shopping trips. Gathering places where conversations and friendships get shared are taboo. Libraries, coffee shops, brewpubs, art galleries and any space smaller than six feet square, are now officially declared uninhabitable.

Local nurse joins Fonda’s climate rally

Sebastopol resident Mary Wyman was arrested on Dec. 20 for civil disobedience in the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington D.C. Wyman was one of 600 individuals marching at a Fire Drill Friday rally, an event created by Jane Fonda to call attention to the climate crisis.

Utarid steps down as head of arts center

The board of directors at Sebastopol Center for the Arts (SCA) has announced that Anjana Utarid, SCA’s executive director for the past two years, will be stepping down from her position as head of the arts center. The newly established role of Creative Director will be filled in the interim by longtime Visual Arts Director Catherine Devriese. Matthew Groff, who is currently director of operations, will be interim managing director.
