2019 was a big year for the environment in west county — in terms of activism, legislative moves and, well, nature itself, which seemed for much of the year to be in a full state of revolt.

YEAR IN REVIEW: Housing and homelessness

Local governments are struggling to find ways to increase the number of homes being built in west county — affordable homes in particular — but increasing the amount of housing stock in ways that don’t damage the environment or the character of the towns in which they’re built is a tall order.

CHAG SAMEACH — The Sonoma County Chabad Jewish Center hosted a menorah lighting in Healdsburg on Sunday night, Dec. 29. The lighting marked the last night of Hannukah. Rabbi Mendel Wolvovsky (left) led candle-holding attendees in Hannukah prayer as he lit Chabad’s large, traveling menorah.

The Art of the Ornament, Dec. 20

HOLLY JOLLY ARTS AND CRAFTS — The Healdsburg Community Center hosted a holiday-themed arts and crafts workshop for kids on Friday, Dec. 20. Kids painted their own little ornaments and Christmas tree star toppers complete with glitter and a bendable wire to create a tree shape. Kids also got a chance to create their very own pinecone bird feeder drenched in peanut butter and rolled in bird seed.

Healdsburg Shared Ministries toy and coat drive

Bringing joy to local families —Dozens of families lined up at the Healdsburg Community Center on Friday, Dec. 20 for the Healdsburg Shared Ministries and St. Paul’s toy and coat drive. Volunteers clad in Santa hats helped families pick out gifts and coats. Attendees were allowed to pick out one coat and one pair of shoes per child and one stocking stuffer and gift per child. Toys for kids ages 0 to 14 were provided.
