Herrington testifies before congress on disaster impacts on schools

On June 5, Steven D. Herrington, Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools, testified before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education. The hearing, titled, “This is Not a Drill: Education-Related Response and Recovery in the Wake of Natural Disasters” was held at the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

Mental wellness groups geared toward teens come to the library

This summer the Healdsburg Regional Library will offer a series of mental health classes for teenagers, thanks to an innovative partnership between the Sonoma County Library system and Social Advocates for Youth (SAY), a nonprofit offering mental health and housing services for youth.

CalFire suspends burn permits for fire season

After another wet winter and above average snow pack, warming temperatures and winds are quickly drying out the abundant annual grass crop. The increasing fire danger posed by the high volume of dead grass and hotter, drier conditions in the region is prompting CalFire to suspend all burn permits for outdoor residential burning within the State Responsibility Area of Sonoma, Lake, Napa, Solano, Yolo and Colusa counties.
