Improving access to your library: Library eliminates fines for 80,000 patrons

On July 1, the Sonoma County Library went “fine-free” and eliminated overdue fines for items returned late. In addition, all past fines were waived. In all, more than 80,000 people — 30 percent of all library borrowers — had their overdue fines waived.

“Why doesn’t someone do something about all the trash in the creek?” This question from an 11 year old girl scout surprised me. Dozens of energetic volunteers surrounded us scouring the banks of Santa Rosa Creek along the Prince Memorial Greenway for trash washed down by the winter rains. I started to explain that many people were indeed doing something, only to be interrupted by her observation that cut to the quick of any storm water program, “Yes, but if people were really doing something, we wouldn’t have to be here cleaning up after them.”

Pomo basket weaver discusses technique and culture

On Feb. 12, the Healdsburg Museum and Historical Society hosted a weaving demonstration and informative talk.  Clint McKay, Dry Creek Pomo/Wappo/Wintun weaver, is a featured participant in the museum’s current exhibit, "From Diggers Bend to River Rock: People and History of Dry Creek Rancheria."
