Hundreds of people came out to honor the dead and celebrate the living for Corazon Healdsburg's Dia de los Muertos celebration. There were marigold altars, Aztec dancers, face painting, friends laughing, family and community gathering all together! It was splendid.
Breweries join forces to raise money in wake of fires
Within a day of waking up to the devastation and fear caused by the fires, several local breweries had come up with a plan to create a special brew in support of those affected. Richard Norgrove, owner and brewmaster of The Bear Republic Brewing Company got a phone call at 2 a.m. in Oregon from his head brewer Rob Kent. He knew something was wrong, but that was just the start of it.

Fires highlight critical weaknesses in communication infrastructure
On the first night of the fires in Sonoma County, large swaths of the region lost cell phone coverage and internet connectivity, as Verizon and Comcast coverage took a big hit. At the height of the destruction, as many as 77 cell towers were taken off the grid. Despite swift reaction times from the providers, the loss of communications was costly in the first, most hectic hours of the firestorm.

A precious gem of coho salmon habitat just became more rare and special. Felta Creek watershed did not burn in the firestorm, but a whole lot of Sonoma County’s forest and wildlife habitat did. The streams that flow through the burned areas of the Russian River watershed are perhaps irreparably damaged. They will still carry water but without the shade of surrounding trees, that water will be warmer, will dry up earlier and erosion from the scorched hillsides will choke spawning gravels with fine sediment.

Exhibit of abstract painting by Marian Murphy til Dec. 1
An exhibit of Healdsburg artist Marian Murphy’s abstract art is on display at the Cloverdale History Museum, until Dec. 1. After a career as a mother and secretary, Murphy at the age of 38, fell in love with photography. Studying at the Ohio Institute of Photography, she became a professional photographer and enjoyed her career as a portrait photographer in Healdsburg for 30 years.
