The Wall That Heals

Remembrance and Respect—The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. was on display in Windsor from March 28 to 31. In addition to the wall replica, there was an mobile education center about the war and the memorial as well as the traditional POW/MIA Empty Chair display. On Saturday, March 30, Chief Carlos Basurto led a brief ceremony with speakers that included a Gold Star widow, a reading of names of Sonoma County residents memorialized on the wall (59 in total) followed a 59 second moment of silence to remember them, and then a bagpiper playing Amazing Grace.

Getting COVID-19 testing, vaccination resources can be a struggle in Cloverdale

For Cloverdale, located at the northernmost tip of Sonoma County, access to COVID-19-related resources like readily available testing has been difficult. Slowly but surely, community leaders are working to make strides to make both testing and vaccination more accessible, but say that there’s still more work to do.

Animal Shelter Answers

The Healdsburg Animal Shelter is in the business of saving lives, and we do it well. National averages show approximately 50% of dogs and 70% of cats entering shelters are euthanized. The Healdsburg Animal Shelter’s rate is 7%. Additionally, in 2011, our dog adoptions tripled; cat adoptions increased by 29%; medical expenses decreased by 75%; professional fees decreased by 53%; income from fundraising events increased by 358%; charitable giving doubled and volunteers contributed 1,500 more volunteer hours. These are amazing accomplishments. Operationally our shelter ranks among the top in the nation.

On Monday, Sept. 29, at 2:24pm Drunk driving was reported at The Matheson on Matheson Street. While en route, an officer saw a naked woman in front of the restaurant. The 67-YO woman was arrested and transported to county jail for driving under the influence (DUI).

Award-winning pizza chef Leah Scurto and Clarence Wainer opened their restaurant PizzaLeah right at the eve of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, and while Scurto had to quickly pivot to take-out, her business is still thriving and about to celebrate its one-year anniversary.

County cannabis regulations moving forward

Over the past several weeks the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors has hosted a series of town hall meetings to gather input from the community to shape future rules addressing medical cannabis. Later this year, Californians will again vote on whether or not to legalize recreational use of marijuana.
