Rescheduled candidate forum set for Sept. 17

The Rotary Club of Windsor will present a Virtual Candidates Forum on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020, at 5:30 p.m.

Rotary project helps get water to Tanzanian school

The Rotary Club of Sebastopol Sunrise, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Bukoba, Tanzania, successfully completed a water, sanitation and hygiene Rotary Global Grant project at Iluhya Secondary School in Bukoba. The rural boarding school, 30 kilometers outside of town, lacked sufficient water for the 600 students, faculty and staff. Students had to rise at 5 a.m. and hike 4 kilometers to a spring and carry water back to school in five-gallon buckets each day before attending classes.

Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods launches fire recovery donation campaign

Fingers of the Walbridge Fire burned slowly down slopes and into parts of the forest floor of the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve last week, and while it did not affect any structures or iconic trees such as the 1,400-year-old Colonel Armstrong tree, the fire did back its way down through the Austin Creek State Recreation Area through the Bullfrog Pond Campground, causing damage to picnic tables, bathrooms, fencing and trails.

Healthcare Foundation raises over $450,000 for local COVID response

The Healthcare Foundation Northern Sonoma County(HCF) hosted its first-ever virtual gala on Saturday, Aug. 29, raising $453,380 at the event and lead-up fundraising for various funding needs including its Emergency Healthcare Fund.

The Redwood Empire Foodbank held a food distribution event in response to the Walbridge Fire for evacuees and for those in need of food this morning, Aug. 31, at the Guerneville School. Volunteers worked quickly packing onions, cauliflower, apples, carrots, pork, butter and cartons of milk into bags for the waiting line of cars. Folks from Dogwood Animal Rescue in Sebastopol were also on site to give out dog and cat food for those with a furry friend at home.

Living Peace Wall ceremony canceled for the year

Sebastopol’s Living Peace Wall will have to wait another year for a new batch of inductees. The annual induction ceremony for the wall has been canceled and rescheduled for late August or early September 2021.

At approximately 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31 a small grass fire erupted in an empty field along Old Redwood Highway, just east of the terminus of Starr Road. The field sits between AAction Rents and McLea’s Tire, though neither business suffered damage as a result of the blaze.

Meeting will tackle MOUs for school during a pandemic

At the Sept. 1 meeting of the Windsor Unified School District Board of Trustees the most pressing matters for the evening will revolve around finalizing plans and Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) for distance learning.
