Remembrance and Respect—The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. was on display in Windsor from March 28 to 31. In addition to the wall replica, there was an mobile education center about the war and the memorial as well as the traditional POW/MIA Empty Chair display. On Saturday, March 30, Chief Carlos Basurto led a brief ceremony with speakers that included a Gold Star widow, a reading of names of Sonoma County residents memorialized on the wall (59 in total) followed a 59 second moment of silence to remember them, and then a bagpiper playing Amazing Grace.
Schools throughout Sonoma County wrestle with when to close on smoky days
Controversy exploded last week when local school districts decided to close, then open, and in a few cases, close again as smoke from the Camp Fire in Butte County reached Sonoma County. Parents took to social media to complain, and districts and the county’s superintendent scrambled to calm fears and frustrations.
High school seniors can apply for builders corps
The North Bay Construction Corps (NBCC), a construction exploration and training program for local high school seniors in their last semester of high school, is now accepting applications for the 2019 corps. There will be three chapters in Sonoma County — Sonoma, Rohnert Park and Healdsburg.
Heirloom Expo returns for eighth year
The eighth annual Heirloom Expo kicks off at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds on Sept. 11 and runs through Sept. 13. The event, which bills itself as the “World’s Fair of Pure Food” will feature exhibits, speakers, vendors and more over it’s three-day run.
California HOPE receives $1 million grant to provide mental health services to wildfire victims
The Sonoma County Department of Health Services (DHS) has received a $1 million grant to continue the California Helping Outreach Possibilities Empowering (HOPE) program, which delivers mental health services targeting those affected by the wildfires in October 2017.
County cannabis regulations moving forward
Over the past several weeks the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors has hosted a series of town hall meetings to gather input from the community to shape future rules addressing medical cannabis. Later this year, Californians will again vote on whether or not to legalize recreational use of marijuana.
