Life returns to Sonoma County parks after the fire

With the sun shining, the brooks babbling and green in abundance, it is time to experience the regrowth of the regional parks in Sonoma County. Many are witnessing the rising wildflowers and vegetation from the ashes of October, with trails being reopened and support for restoration. A few months after the fire, the fungi, plants and flowers are blooming once again in the midst of the spring season. Sonoma County is active as always, with thousands of people participating in the season’s sunshine.

A native son, the Great War and the Universal Flag of Peace

The debate about whether the United States should have fought in World War I is all but forgotten today. Although the war began in August 1914, a broad coalition of antiwar forces tried to stop our country from entering the war — and had succeeded until April 1917 when President Wilson asked Congress to declare war on Germany. Even fewer remember that a Healdsburg pioneer became a leading peace activist in the west during the first World War.

HJH students perform

On Dec. 7, 2012 at the Fitch Mountain Campus, the Healdsburg Junior High Spanish class students performed a dance entitled “Los Machetes” as part of the “Navidad Mexicana” Christmas celebration for the families of both the Spanish speaking and English speaking community. The dance was taught to the students by a community member (Mrs. Yolanda Giron), who was a former dancer for the Ballet Folkloric Dance Group in Oaxaca, Mexico. The performance was a huge success as it validates the importance of experiencing the culture when learning a foreign language. Pictured above are (l-r): T. Van Vranken, K. Robberts, A. Nuñez, A.
